Tips for Returning Found Items

Thanks for filling in the form to help get an item back to its owner.

Once you pressed submit, we notified the owner that you’ve found their item. They’ll be in touch soon using the contact details you shared.

In the meantime, here are a few simple, sensible ways to return the item safely and smoothly.

Getting in Touch

When the owner contacts you:

Confirm what you found and where you found it (so you both know you’re talking about the same item)

Share what’s easiest for you: meeting up, leaving it somewhere safe, or posting it

Keep messages clear and courteous  you’re both trying to solve the same problem

Option 1: Meet in Person

If you decide to meet the owner, we recommend a straightforward, public handover.

Best practices:

  • Meet in a public, high-traffic location (cafe, shopping centre, train station)
  • Choose daytime hours when possible
  • If you’d prefer, bring someone with you
  • Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return
  • Trust your instincts – if something feels off, suggest an alternative arrangement
  • You’re doing a good thing, but your safety and comfort come first.

Option 2: Arrange Shipping

If meeting isn’t practical, you can post the item but only if you’re comfortable.

Best practices:

  • Ask the owner to cover postage costs (you shouldn’t be out of pocket)
  • Use tracked / signed-for delivery for peace of mind
  • Only share the details needed to post it, and keep instructions simple

Option 3: Leave It With Staff or Lost Property

If you found the item at a venue (gym, hotel, office, cafe, event), it’s often simplest to leave it with reception or their lost property.

Best practices:

  • Tell the owner exactly where it’s been left (venue name + desk/reception)
  • If possible, share a reference (staff name, time/date, or a receipt/tag number)

Should I Accept a Reward?

That’s entirely up to you. Some owners may offer a thank you gift and it’s okay to accept or politely decline.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

If the owner becomes unresponsive:

Give it a little time people are busy

If you can’t keep hold of the item, leave it with a sensible lost property option and message the details

If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable:

  • Don’t proceed with a meeting
  • Suggest an alternative (public location, reception desk, or tracked postage)
  • Trust your instincts
