Tips for Retrieving Lost Items
Someone has found your item and reached out—that’s great news! Below are two common ways to arrange the return of your item. Choose the option that works best for both you and the finder.
Most finders are genuinely kind people who want to help. By taking sensible precautions and being respectful throughout the process, you can arrange a smooth, safe return.
Getting in Touch
Use the email or phone number the finder provided in the finder notification form to get in touch with them. Respond promptly and be courteous—they’ve already taken the time to help you.
When you reach out:
- Thank them for finding your item
- Confirm what they’ve found and where they found it (to verify it’s yours)
- Discuss the most convenient way to arrange the return
Option 1: Meet in Person
If you and the finder would prefer to meet in person, here are a few tips to help make the handover safe and straightforward. Always prioritise your safety.
Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend:
- Meet in a public, high-traffic location (café, shopping center, train station)
- Choose daytime hours when the area is busy
- If you’d prefer, bring someone with you
- Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return
- Trust your instincts – if something feels off, suggest an alternative arrangement
Your safety matters more than any lost item.
Option 2: Arrange Shipping
If you and the finder would prefer to arrange the return by post, here are some recommendations to help make the process as smooth as possible for both of you.
Best practices:
- Offer to cover postage costs – The finder is already doing you a favour
- Request signed-for delivery (tracked shipping) so you both have peace of mind
- Provide clear shipping instructions including your address and any special requirements
- Reimburse promptly once the item is shipped
- Work collaboratively with your finder to make the process as smooth as possible for both of you.

What If Something Goes Wrong?
If the finder becomes unresponsive:
- Give them a reasonable amount of time to reply (a few days)
- Send a polite follow-up message
- Remember that people have busy lives—they may need time to respond
If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable:
- Do not proceed with a meeting
- Suggest an alternative (public location, reception desk, or tracked postage)
- Trust your instincts
